Alaska 2024: Roll 10 - Whitehorse to Dawson City
We started our morning with a nice, brisk run along the Yukon River in Whitehorse. We saw some wildlife including a fox and beaver on our run which was pretty fun.
On our run I spied a road across the Yukon River from the main part of the city and decided that we should make a quick detour over to the viewpoint before we left the area.
You will notice that this is another color roll. I chose a roll of Kodak 250D again and was glad that I did. I really like how these first images of Whitehorse turned out.
Our trip today is to make our way north to Dawson City where we will have our second "zero day" to do some exploring and laundry. This part of the trip takes us off of the Alaskan Highway so that we can entry Alaska at the northernmost border crossing and visit Chicken, Alaska. I also wanted to visit Dawson City for a few days this time.
Most of the day was cloudy but I think that made for interesting pictures and was preferred over clear blue skies without clouds.
When we were getting to Whitehorse we overheard that the road to Dawson City, the Klondike Highway was closed because of some forest fires that were right up to the road. After doing a bit of our own research it looked like things were open and that all of the fire had been contained. We had our first brush with mother nature deciding to change trip plans and so far we were alright.
Driving by a forrest fire that is still smoldering is something that has to be experienced to understand. It was a bit wild.
One of the things that we have learned on these long trips is that it is wise to try and stop at all of the bathroom opportunities you are given. You never know when your next stop will be. I often used these as an excuse to stretch my legs and also wander around and snap some photos.
We stayed again at the Bonanza Gold Motel & RV Park, which we had stayed before at in 2015. It had laundry facilities and also a car wash.
I wandered around a bit to shoot a few more images for the day and watched my father-in-law try and get the first 11 days of bugs off the grill of the Suburban.
