Alaska 2024: Roll 5 - Banff and Jasper National Parks
This roll starts us with us on our fifth day of the Alaska trip. Today was a long drive day so we started off early in Waterton Park to make our way through both Banff and Jasper National Parks on our way to Hinton for a two night stay. Don't worry about our blowing through Jasper, we will be back in the next roll to explore a bit more.
The morning between Waterton Park and the city of Banff was pretty but it rained most of the way and was overcast and a bit chilly. It wasn't very conducive for stopping for photographs. We did get a chance to stop quickly in Longview, Alberta where the headquarters of Flic Film is located. We stopped there quickly to stretch our legs and snap a "I was here" photo and we moved on.
We didn't get to really stop for photos or views until after lunch. This was mostly due to the weather but also because we had to keep moving because of the long day.
We did get out at this lovely waterfall to take some photos and I struggled down a loose hillside with two cameras in my hands to get under the bridge for a shot or two. When I came back up Kristy was shaking her head wondering what is wrong with me.
I remembered the viewpoint above from our 2019 trip and wanted to try my hand with the Xpan instead of the Mamiya 7 which I was shooting on that trip. I like how it turned out and shows the scale of the mountains.
I haven't talked about the choice of film for this roll. I have been shooting quite a bit of Kodak Tri-X 400 in 120 the past few years but still haven't used much of it in 35mm. I picked up ten rolls for this trip and this is the first of those that I shot.
Again, having people in the image give you a sense of scale of the landscape. These valleys we drove through on our way north were something amazing to see.
At the end of this roll the Xpan told me that I needed to change my batteries by stopping after the next to last shot. I learned many years ago to try and have backup batteries in your bag for just this occasion so after a few minutes messing with the battery cap on the camera I was good to go and on to the next roll.
But that is for another post.
